Records Officer Monthly Report – September 2024

Welcome to the September report of the 2023/24 shooting season.

In previous years we would now only focus on shooting indoors at the YMCA, however as there is one final round of the DCAS Summer Postal there were 4 outdoor evening sessions planned to allow archers to shoot these rounds.

Club Records

Classifications

The following Classification levels have been achieved, and badges are in the process of being awarded under the new Archery GB Classification Scheme:

  • Gary Wong (Longbow) – Bowman 1st Class. Congratulations to Gary, this is the highest classification that can be awarded within the club.
  • Phil Harley (Barebow) – Bowman 3rd Class.

Now that we have moved to indoor shooting during the week there is an opportunity for new archers to start to shoot for Indoor Archery GB Progress awards, please see me at your next session and I will explain.

Competitions

The club has entered the following teams into the DCAS Summer Postal Leagues:

  • One Senior Recurve/Barebow Long Warwick team
  • One Senior Compound Long Warwick team
  • One Senior Longbow Warwick team
  • Two Senior Recurve/Barebow Warwick 50 teams
  • One Junior Mixed Style Warwick 30 team

There are three archers per team, and the club will collate the scores in descending order and the highest scores will be entered each month. Scores will need to be submitted on a club score sheet and signed as indicated. The rules for the competition can be found on the DCAS Postal Competitions page, and the associated score sheet on the Club Score Sheets page.

As you can see from above only 5 archers submitted scores across three of the six divisions entered in September, mostly due to the adverse weather conditions. Well done to all those who provided scores for this competition.

The following scores were submitted for the final round of the competition:

  • Senior Recurve/Barebow Long Warwick team – Won Division 2
  • Senior Compound Long Warwick team – Finished in 5th place in Division 1
  • Senior Longbow Warwick team – Finished in 5th place in Division 1
  • Senior Recurve/Barebow Warwick 50 team A – Finished in 2nd place in Division 1
  • Senior Recurve/Barebow Warwick 50 team B – Finished in 3rd place in Division 2
  • Junior Mixed Style Warwick 30 team – Finished in 2nd place in Division 1

Submission of a DCAS Summer Postal score sheet also gives you the opportunity to earn a Six Gold, Three Gold (Longbow) badge if you shoot the relevant score on the longest distance of your round. More information about this scheme can be found in the Award Scheme page of the club website.

DCAS Autumn Gold hosted by Redruth Archers (1st September)

Two Yelverton Bowmen archers travelled to Redruth for this DCAS organised competition shooting St George/Albion/Windsor rounds, and both shot well:

  • Jill Hudson came 2nd in the Ladies Albion Longbow
  • Gary Wong came 3rd in the Gents St George Longbow

Somerset County Archery Association Battle of Britain WRS WA1440 hosted by Burnham Company of Archers (15th September)

Gary Wong was the sole Yelverton Bowmen archer to make the trip to Somerset for this event. Gary shot very well and scored 546 (which is a Bowmen 1st Class score) to win the Gents Longbow competition by the small margin of 2 points. In addition to this Gary won the Highest score by a Longbow Tankard.

Well done Gary.

Grand Western Archery Society Intercounties Tournament hosted by Cleve Archers (22nd September)

Two Yelverton Bowmen archers were invited to represent the Devon and Cornwall Archery Society at the above competition. The competition was shot in really wet conditions, however both archers shot well.

  • Alex Rowe shot in the Recurve team
  • Linda Wright shot in the Barebow team

Both archers helped to ensure that the DCAS team achieved the following

Paris 2024: Aim for Paris Virtual Challenge

Six Yelverton Bowmen archers submitted scores for the Aim for Paris Virtual Challenge and AGB badges are in the process of being awarded to the following archers:

2024/25 Indoor Season

DCAS Winter Postal

The club have applied for entry of the following teams in the DCAS Winter Postal competitions:

Portsmouth (indoor)

  • 3 in number Senior Recurve/Barebow teams
  • 1 in number Senior Compound team
  • 1 in number Senior Longbow team
  • 1 in number Junior (U16) team

Frostbite (outdoor)

  • 1 in number Senior Compound plus (1 compound archer + 2 other bow types)
  • 2 in number Senior Recurve/Barebow
  • 1 in number Senior Longbow
  • 1 in number Senior Mixed non-Compound
  • 1 in number Junior Mixed non-Compound

As with the summer postals these will be open to all club members. Archers scores should be submitted to the clubs records officer at the end of each month on a fully completed and signed club score sheet. However only one score should be submitted each month for entry into these competitions.

Scores submitted for these competitions will also qualify for individual Frostbite & Portsmouth badges.

Bray 1 League

Running alongside the DCAS Portsmouth Postal and Frostbite Postal Competitions we are also running an internal club competition shooting Bray I rounds. The competition will run from the beginning of October to the end of March, and as such this means that all indoor shooting sessions during this period are considered to be club Target days. This means that archers will be able to shoot rounds and submit scores towards the Bowmen classifications.

Internal End of Season Nationals Competition (Entry Form)

2 September 2024

We are excited to announce that Yelverton Bowmen will be hosting an internal competition for our members on Sunday 15th September 2024. In case of unfavorable weather, the event will be rescheduled to the following Sunday 22nd September.

The chosen round for this competition will be the Nationals round. Participants will shoot a total of 6 dozen arrows, with 4 dozen at the longer distance and 2 dozen at the shorter distance.

Rounds will be entered according to the current 252 classification at the time of entry. For example, if you have a 40 yards 252 qualification, you can enter up to the National 50 round.

  • Neill White (Longbow) – Outdoor Grand Master Bowman. This has been awarded to Neill by Archery GB and was achieved by shooting at an exceptionally high level in external record status competitions. Congratulations to Neill, this is a significant achievement and is the second highest nationally recognised level.
  • Alex Rowe (Recurve) – Bowman 1st Class. Congratulations to Alex, this is the highest classification that can be awarded at club level.
  • Corey Richardson (Compound) – Bowman 2nd Class
  • Gary Wong (Compound) – Bowman 2nd Class
  • Gary Wong (Longbow) – Bowman 2nd Class. Congratulations to Gary, he is the first archer that I have awarded a Bowman level badge for multiple bow styles in the same season.
  • Stan Axworthy (Recurve) – Archer 1st Class
  • Finley Melia (Recurve) – Archer 1st Class

Redruth Archers Double WA1440 Weekend (3rd & 4th August)

Several Yelverton Bowmen archers traveled to Redruth for this weekend competition shooting 90m or 70m WA1440 rounds, and all shot well with Alex, Jill & Neill shooting new club records:

  • Alex Rowe came 3rd in the Men’s 90m Recurve
  • Gary Wong came 5th in the Men’s 90m Compound
  • Jill Hudson came 3rd in the Ladies 70m Longbow
  • Neill White came 1st in the Mens 50+ 70m Longbow

Exmouth Archers WA Weekend (17th & 18th August)

Several Yelverton Bowmen archers made the trip to Exmouth for this competition. Day one consisted of a WA 720 seeding round, followed by Heads to Heads. Day Two saw archers shooting WA1440 Star & Metric rounds.

Day 1:

  • Iain Lees came 7th in the Compound Men category ranking round, and was eventually beaten in the head to head gold medal match by one point. Well done to Iain.
  • Gary Wong came 5th in the Compound Men category ranking round, and was knocked out in the head to head by the archer who went on to take third place.
  • Corey Richardson came 8th in the Compound Men category ranking round, and was knocked out in the second round of Head to Heads by the eventual winner.
  • IANSEO | Exmouth Archers WA Weekend Day 1 (WA 720)

Day 2:

  • Neill White secured the gold medal in the Men’s WA 1440 90m Longbow,
  • Gary Wong switched bow styles on day 2 and took the bronze medal in the Men’s WA 1440 90m Longbow,
  • Corey Richardson took the gold medal in the Men’s WA 1440 (70m) Compound.
  • IANSEO | Exmouth Archers WA Weekend Day 2 (WA 1440)

Lizard Peninsula Bowmen Summer Bonanza (24th & 25th August)

Gary Wong was the only club member to make the trip to the Lizard peninsula and shot well on both days:

Day 1:

  • Gary came 1st place in the Men’s Single Hereford Longbow, and

Day 2:

  • 2nd place in the Men’s Single York Longbow

Well done Gary, great effort.

Paris 2024: Aim for Paris Virtual Challenge

The Aim for Paris Virtual Challenge offered archers of all levels the chance to shoot alongside the best of the best during the Olympics and Paralympics from wherever you are.

From the 26 July to the 8 September, archers were able to compete in the Aim for Paris Virtual Challenge and experience the spirit of international competition.

With distances ranging from 10 metres to 70 metres, each round presents a unique challenge, mirroring the intensity and precision of the Olympic and Paralympic events.

Participating in the Aim for Paris Virtual Challenge is easy and accessible to all. Simply shoot your chosen round, record your scores, and submit your entry via the online form.

Only a small number of archers took up this challenge and submitted internal score sheets, these will be assessed and discussed with those who entered.

Target Days

There will be no season long competition this summer so the club are introducing a number of target days each month, Rounds will be announced before the start of each month and will be tailored to give archers talking part in a number of external competitions a chance to practice the relevant rounds. Also designated rounds shot on Target Days will count towards the achievement of an archers Bowman Classification. These rounds will be released in the Events section of the club website. Score sheets and clipboards etc will be made available on the day, and the rounds will be shot & scored in accordance with Archery GB rules.

The Target Days for September will include:

  • Sunday 1st September: Long Metric / Warwicks
  • Tuesday 3rd September: Warwicks (in support of DCAS Postal competition only)
  • Friday 6th September: Warwicks (in support of DCAS Postal competition only)

Dunster Archery Week (15th-21st July)

The Grand Western Archery Society holds it Annual Archery Championship Meeting at Dunster Castle Deer Park in June each year, set in the grounds of Dunster Castle which has been a fortified Tor since the late Anglo-Saxon period. The full results for this competition can be found on the GWAS website.

Alex Rowe and KT Pollington (associate member) took part in the competition.

Alex came 8th in the Gents Recurve WA 1440 (90m) with a score of 1091, 10th in the Big Game Round Field Shoot with 30 hits and a score of 444, 88th in the Longbow Two Way Western with 55 hits and a score of 197 after picking up a longbow for the first time on that very day and 8th in the Gents Recurve Clout with a combined  49 hits and a score of 118.

KT won the Ladies Barebow WA 1440 (70m) round with a score of 591, came 4th in the Big Game Round Field Shoot with 24 hits and a score of 274 and came 2nd in the Ladies Barebow Clout with a combined 32 hits and a score of 68.

Target Days

There will be no season long competition this summer so the club are introducing a number of target days each month, Rounds will be announced before the start of each month and will be tailored to give archers talking part in a number of external competitions a chance to practice the relevant rounds. Also designated rounds shot on Target Days will count towards the achievement of an archers Bowman Classification. These rounds will be released in the Events section of the club website. Score sheets and clipboards etc will be made available on the day, and the rounds will be shot & scored in accordance with Archery GB rules.

Paris 2024: Aim for Paris Virtual Challenge

The Aim for Paris Virtual Challenge offers archers of all levels the chance to shoot alongside the best of the best during the Olympics and Paralympics from wherever you are.

From the 26 July to the 8 September, compete in the Aim for Paris Virtual Challenge and experience the spirit of international competition.

With distances ranging from 10 metres to 70 metres, each round presents a unique challenge, mirroring the intensity and precision of the Olympic and Paralympic events.

Participating in the Aim for Paris Virtual Challenge is easy and accessible to all. Simply shoot your chosen round, record your scores, and submit your entry via the online form.

There are three archers per team, and the club will collate the scores in descending order and the highest scores will be entered each month. Scores will need to be submitted on a club score sheet and signed as indicated. In June we managed to win in 3 of the 6 divisions we have entered. Well done to all those who provided scores for this competition.

Yelverton Bowmen Archers took part in one external competitions in June:

Bowmen of Wadebridge WRS Double WA720 (22nd June)

Six Yelverton Bowmen archers took part in day one of the competition, and all of them took home a medal. Well done to everyone who took part.

  • Gary Wong came 1st, and Dominic Dalton 2nd place in the Men’s Longbow
  • Neill White claimed 2nd place in the 50+ Men’s Longbow
  • Sam Dalton came 2nd in the Women’s Longbow
  • Steve Marsh came 2nd in the Men’s Barebow

Bowmen of Wadebridge Mixed Herefords (23rd June)

Gary Wong was the only Yelverton Bowmen archer to shoot on the second day at Wadebridge and took first place in the Hereford Mens Longbow, well done Gary.

Brixham UKRS Open Rose (26th May)

The round shot were York, Hereford & Bristol rounds, and as the competition was a UK Record Status medals and trophies were only awarded to archers competing in the rounds relevant to their category. The weather conditions, and in particular the ever changing wind made shooting difficult for all competitors.

Rounds were shot by Andrew Howie, Corey Richardson, John Pengilley, Linda Wright, Ken Kingston, Jill Hudson, Dominic Dalton & Sam Dalton.

In the end though only Linda Wright was able to secure a medal for her Barebow round in the Bristol II event. Well done Linda.

In March we won in all 6 divisions. This is a fantastic achievement by all those who shot.

Well done to all those who submitted score sheets throughout the indoor season. We ended the league with a fantastic first place in two divisions and second place in the other four. This shows that the club is competing well with the other DCAS clubs.

As with the Portsmouth League there are three archers per team, and the club will collate the scores in descending order and the highest scores will be entered each month. Scores will need to be submitted on a club score sheet and signed as indicated. In March we once again won in three and lost in three divisions. Once again thank you for your scores, it has been a fantastic effort all season, so than you to all those who braved the weather at our outdoor shoots. As with the Portsmouth league we won in two divisions.

In total 10 archers took part in the clubs inaugural Bray League, with 5 of those submitting 5 or more qualifying scores. The final results, including handicap adjusted totals, are as follows:

  • First Place – Steve Millard (7244)
  • Second Place – John Pengilley (7240)
  • Third Place – Paul Horsley (7227)

And finally…

April sees the club start to move into outdoor shooting so there will be no internal or postal competitions to enter next month.

However the club have made a submission to join the DCAS Summer Postal. This will once again be shot over five months from 1st May. The club have elected to enter the following divisions:

  • Long Warwick – Compound Archers
  • Long Warwick – Archers shooting any style except compound
  • Warwick – Longbow Archers
  • 2 x Warwick 50 – Archers shooting any style except compound
  • Warwick 30 – U16 archers, but only 1 compound archer

Any archer is able to submit scores for entry into the competition providing they are capable of shooting the required distances, and the top scoring rounds will be entered into each team. Full details of the competition can be found here.

Welcome to the February report of the 2023/24 shooting season.

February saw another busy month for the club with archers obtaining a number of awards, and recognition in the DCAS Indoor Championship. Keep up the great work everyone.

Club Records

Having reviewed a number of shooting record cards, the following new club records have been set and certificates have been awarded:

  • Jonathan Ward – Men’s Barebow:
    • Bray I – Score 213 (Previous score 198)
  • Jill Hudson – Ladies Longbow:
    • Bray I – Score 103 (Previous score 98)
    • Frostbite – Score 163 (Previous 97)
  • Neill White – Men’s 50+ Longbow
    • Frostbite – Score 268 (Previous 264)
  • Alex Rowe – Men’s Senior Recurve:
    • WA 18 (Single Face) – Score 547 (previous score 544)

Classifications

The following Classification levels have been achieved, and badges are in the process of being awarded under the new Archery GB Classification Scheme:

Competitions

February saw the club take part in the fourth of five rounds of the two DCAS postal competitions, Portsmouth and Frostbite. Yelverton Bowmen were also the hosts of the 46th annual DCAS Indoor Championships.

DCAS Portsmouth Winter Postal League 2023/2024

The club has entered the following teams into the DCAS Winter Postal Leagues:

  • Three Senior Recurve/Barebow teams
  • One Senior Compound team
  • One Senior Longbow team
  • One Junior Mixed Style team

There are three archers per team, and the club will collate the scores in descending order and the highest scores will be entered each month. Scores will need to be submitted on a club score sheet and signed as indicated. The rules for the competition can be found on the DCAS Postal Competitions page, and the associated score sheet on the Club Score Sheets page. Submission of a score sheet also gives you the opportunity to earn a Portsmouth Badge.

The following scores were submitted by members of the club and as you can see from the results below the club performed exceptionally well:

In February we again had 5 wins and 1 loss. This is a fantastic achievement by all those who shot.

Bray 1 League

Running alongside the DCAS Portsmouth Postal and Frostbite Postal Competitions we are currently running a new internal club competition which will continue until the end of March.

Full details of the indoor season long competition can be found here. A results table will be updated monthly.

With one month to go Steve Millard remains in first place, Paul Horsley in second and Jonathan Ward is now in third place.

DCAS 46th Open Indoor Championships

On Sunday the 25th of February 2024, more than 70 archers from across Devon, Cornwall and wider afield mustered at the YMCA in Plymouth for the Devon and Cornwall Archery Societies 46th Open Indoor Championship. DCAS 46th Open Indoor Championships

On Sunday the 25th of February 2024, more than 70 archers from across Devon, Cornwall and wider afield mustered at the YMCA in Plymouth for the Devon and Cornwall Archery Societies 46th Open Indoor Championship. Archers shot WA18m rounds over two sessions at this UK Record Status event, hosted by Yelverton Bowmen.

Whilst 18 clubs were represented in total, Yelverton Bowmen fielded 23 archers; almost 1/3 of the field, and shooting in all bow categories.

A great day was had by all those who took part and Yelverton Bowmen archers won several categories and medalled in all bow types.

Yelverton Bowmen club members ensured the success of the event on the day by providing full support to the DCAS organisers and judging team, as well as running a significant raffle. This was further supported by a group of members who took time out from shooting at club nights to overhaul all of the target bosses etc. Your support to this event is greatly appreciated and was warmly recognised by Ann Gillbanks (DCAS Tournaments Officer) for ensuring that the day ran so smoothly.

Welcome to the January report of the 2023/24 shooting season.

This month has seen an increase in the number of people achieving or bettering their indoor classification. It also saw the resumption of the award of Portsmouth & Frostbite badges.

Club Records

Having reviewed a number of shooting record cards, the following new club records have been set and certificates have been awarded:

  • Neill White – Men’s 50+ Longbow records:
    • WA1440 (Gentlemen) 90m – Score 473 (no previous score)
    • WA1440 (Ladies) / Metric 1 70m – Score 563 (no previous score)
    • Worcester – Score 196 (previous score 144)
  • Georgina Baglow – Ladies 50+ Compound
    • Portsmouth 3 spot – Score 571 (previous score 558)
  • Josie Nuttall – Ladies U14 Barebow:
    • Portsmouth – score 355 ( no previous score)

Classifications

Archery GB have updated the Indoor Rounds and Classifications, including changes to the age groups to bring them in alignment with the recent outdoor changes.

This means that all previous indoor Classification have been archived and all archers will have to regain their classifications.

Everyone issued with the old style badge has now received a replacement new badge.

Frostbite and Portsmouth Score Badges

From January 2024 the club will be awarding new badges for the Portsmouth and Frostbite rounds. To qualify you will need to submit a score to the records officer for entry into the relevant DCAS postal competition. You will then be awarded the badge which the score equals or exceeds. All bow types and age groups qualify as long as the score is shot as part of a postal competition.

Your first badge will free, however as you improve you will have the option of trading in your old badge or paying a £1 contribution towards the new one.

We had a great showing at the Brixham Clipper this month with the following club members winning medals:

There were 12 Yelverton Bowmen taking part in the competition and whilst we did not all shoot as well as we could, we all had a great time; even those experiencing their first competition. Well done everyone.
