Welcome to the February report of the 2023/24 shooting season.

February saw another busy month for the club with archers obtaining a number of awards, and recognition in the DCAS Indoor Championship. Keep up the great work everyone.

Club Records

Having reviewed a number of shooting record cards, the following new club records have been set and certificates have been awarded:

  • Jonathan Ward – Men’s Barebow:
    • Bray I – Score 213 (Previous score 198)
  • Jill Hudson – Ladies Longbow:
    • Bray I – Score 103 (Previous score 98)
    • Frostbite – Score 163 (Previous 97)
  • Neill White – Men’s 50+ Longbow
    • Frostbite – Score 268 (Previous 264)
  • Alex Rowe – Men’s Senior Recurve:
    • WA 18 (Single Face) – Score 547 (previous score 544)
    • Bray I – Score 279 (previous score 276)

Classifications

The following Classification levels have been achieved, and badges are in the process of being awarded under the new Archery GB Classification Scheme:

  • Alex Rowe – Indoor Bowman 1st Class, this is the highest classification able to be awarded by the club, well done Alex.
  • Jill Hudson – Indoor Bowman 2nd Class
  • Paul Mattock – Indoor Bowman 2nd Class
  • Mark Nightingale – Indoor Bowman 3rd Class
  • Francesca Canale-Dow – Indoor Archer 1st Class

Competitions

February saw the club take part in the fourth of five rounds of the two DCAS postal competitions, Portsmouth and Frostbite. Yelverton Bowmen were also the hosts of the 46th annual DCAS Indoor Championships.

DCAS Portsmouth Winter Postal League 2023/2024

The club has entered the following teams into the DCAS Winter Postal Leagues:

  • Three Senior Recurve/Barebow teams
  • One Senior Compound team
  • One Senior Longbow team
  • One Junior Mixed Style team

There are three archers per team, and the club will collate the scores in descending order and the highest scores will be entered each month. Scores will need to be submitted on a club score sheet and signed as indicated. The rules for the competition can be found on the DCAS Postal Competitions page, and the associated score sheet on the Club Score Sheets page. Submission of a score sheet also gives you the opportunity to earn a Portsmouth Badge.

The following scores were submitted by members of the club and as you can see from the results below the club performed exceptionally well:

In February we again had 5 wins and 1 loss. This is a fantastic achievement by all those who shot.

Well done to all those who submitted score sheets, please keep this up. Please remember this is open to all club members, so please take time to submit an entry to me because even if your score is not used it could count towards your next badge.

  • Senior Recurve/Barebow Team A – Remain in 1st place in Division 4
  • Senior Recurve/Barebow Team B – Moved up to 2nd place in Division 5
  • Senior Recurve/Barebow Team C –  Remain in 2nd place in Division 6
  • Compound Team – Have dropped to 3rd place in Division 2
  • Longbow team – Remain in 2nd place in Division 2
  • Junior U16 Mixed – Remain in 1st place in Division 2

The following archers were awarded Portsmouth Badges:

  • Sarah Watson – 500
  • Francesca Canale-Dow – 475

DCAS Frostbite Winter Postal League 2023/2024

As with the Portsmouth League there are three archers per team, and the club will collate the scores in descending order and the highest scores will be entered each month. Scores will need to be submitted on a club score sheet and signed as indicated. The rules for the competition can be found on the DCAS Postal Competitions page, and the associated score sheet on the Club Score Sheets page.

  • One Senior Compound team
  • Two Senior Recurve/Barebow teams
  • One Senior Longbow team
  • One Senior Mixed Non-Compound team
  • One Junior Mixed Non-Compound team

The following scores were submitted by members of the club and as you can see from the results below the club performed reasonably well:

In February we won in three and lost in three divisions. Once again thank you for your scores, please keep this up, and lets see if we can get some junior scores in for the final month.

  • Senior Compound Team – Have dropped from 3rd to 4th place in Division 1
  • Senior Recurve/Barebow Team A – Have moved up from 3rd to 1st place in Division 2
  • Senior Recurve/Barebow Team B – Remain in 1st place in Division 3
  • Senior Longbow Team – Remain in 2nd place in Division 2
  • Senior Mixed Non-Compound Team  –  Remain in 5th place in Division 1
  • Junior U16 Mixed Non-Compound Team  – Remain in 3rd place in Division 1

Furthermore, Neill White has increased his highest Gents Longbow Score to 268 (264 shot in the November round), well done Neill.

The following Frostbite badges were awarded:

  • Andrew Axworthy increased from 315 to 330
  • John Pengilley – Increased from 225 to 250
  • Andrew Howie – Increased from 200 to 250
  • Stan Axworthy – 225
  • Mic Richards – 225

Bray 1 League

Running alongside the DCAS Portsmouth Postal and Frostbite Postal Competitions we are currently running a new internal club competition which will continue until the end of March.

Full details of the indoor season long competition can be found here. A results table will be updated monthly.

With one month to go Steve Millard remains in first place, Paul Horsley in second and Jonathan Ward is now in third place.

DCAS 46th Open Indoor Championships

On Sunday the 25th of February 2024, more than 70 archers from across Devon, Cornwall and wider afield mustered at the YMCA in Plymouth for the Devon and Cornwall Archery Societies 46th Open Indoor Championship. Archers shot WA18m rounds over two sessions at this UK Record Status event, hosted by Yelverton Bowmen.

Whilst 18 clubs were represented in total, Yelverton Bowmen fielded 23 archers; almost 1/3 of the field, and shooting in all bow categories.

A great day was had by all those who took part and Yelverton Bowmen archers won several categories and medalled in all bow types.

Jenny Kerchey was the Lady Paramount for the event and handed out all of the trophies and medals.

DCAS 46th Open Indoor Championships

February 25, 2024

On Sunday the 25th of February 2024, more than 70 archers from across Devon, Cornwall and wider afield mustered at the YMCA in Plymouth for the Devon and Cornwall Archery Societies 46th Open Indoor Championship. Archers shot WA18m rounds over two sessions at this UK Record Status event, hosted by Yelverton Bowmen.

Whilst 18 clubs were represented in total, Yelverton Bowmen fielded 23 archers; almost 1/3 of the field, and shooting in all bow categories.

A great day was had by all those who took part and Yelverton Bowmen archers won several categories and medalled in all bow types.

  • Neill shot an Indoor Grand Master Bowman score and was only 2 points off of the national record
  • Jack Cunningham, 1st place Recurve Men U16 (Junior Trophy)
  • Josie Nuttall, 1st place Barebow Women U15 (Junior Trophy)
  • Iain Lees, 2nd place Compound Men (Silver medal)
  • Iain had an arrow malfunction and still only finished 1 points behind the first place archer!
  • Linda Wright, 2nd place Barebow Women (Silver medal)
  • Steve Marsh, 2nd place Barebow Men (Silver medal)
  • Seraya Danes, 2nd place Recurve Women U15 (Silver medal)
  • Finley Melia, 2nd place Recurve Men U18 (Silver medal)

Team Awards

  • 2nd place in the ‘Club Recurve Team of 4 Archers: Francesca Canale-Dow, Andrew Axworthy, Jamie Pruden and Alex Rowe
  • 3rd place in the ‘Mixed Doubles Team Recurve’: Francesca Canale-Dow and Andrew Axworthy
  • 2nd place in the ‘Mixed Doubles Team Barebow’: Linda Wright and Jonathan Ward

Yelverton Bowmen club members ensured the success of the event on the day by providing full support to the DCAS organisers and judging team, as well as running a significant raffle. This was further supported by a group of members who took time out from shooting at club nights to overhaul all of the target bosses etc. Your support to this event is greatly appreciated and was warmly recognised by Ann Gillbanks (DCAS Tournaments Officer) for ensuring that the day ran so smoothly.

Welcome to the January report of the 2023/24 shooting season.

This month has seen an increase in the number of people achieving or bettering their indoor classification. It also saw the resumption of the award of Portsmouth & Frostbite badges.

Club Records

Having reviewed a number of shooting record cards, the following new club records have been set and certificates have been awarded:

  • Neill White – Men’s 50+ Longbow records:
    • WA1440 (Gentlemen) 90m – Score 473 (no previous score)
    • WA1440 (Ladies) / Metric 1 70m – Score 563 (no previous score)
    • Worcester – Score 196 (previous score 144)
  • Georgina Baglow – Ladies 50+ Compound
    • Portsmouth 3 spot – Score 571 (previous score 558)
  • Josie Nuttall – Ladies U14 Barebow:
    • Portsmouth – score 355 ( no previous score)

Classifications

Archery GB have updated the Indoor Rounds and Classifications, including changes to the age groups to bring them in alignment with the recent outdoor changes.

This means that all previous indoor Classification have been archived and all archers will have to regain their classifications.

Everyone issued with the old style badge has now received a replacement new badge.

We had a great showing at the Brixham Clipper this month with the following club members winning medals:

There were 12 Yelverton Bowmen taking part in the competition and whilst we did not all shoot as well as we could, we all had a great time; even those experiencing their first competition. Well done everyone.

Welcome to the December report of the 2023/24 shooting season.

Due to the Christmas & New Year break there were fewer opportunities for club members to shoot this month.

Club Records

Having reviewed a number of shooting record cards, the following new club records have been set and certificates have been awarded:

  • Jill Hudson – Senior Women’s Longbow:
    • Bray I – Score 98 (previous record 73)
  • Mic Richards – Senior Women’s Barebow:
    • Frostbite – Score 265 (previous score 245)

Classifications

Archery GB have updated the Indoor Rounds and Classifications, including changes to the age groups to bring them in alignment with the recent outdoor changes.

This means that all previous indoor Classification have been archived and all archers will have to regain their classifications.

The club continued to issue the old style indoor classification badges (A to H), however the new style badges have now arrived and will be issued from here on. Anyone who was awarded the old style badge this season can exchange them for a new badge at one of our shooting sessions.

To date 7 archers have submitted Qualifying Bray scores post obtaining a handicap. The current leader with a total of 7236 after shooting 5 qualifying rounds is Steve Millard, well done Steve.

October saw the start of the new indoor season, however outdoor shooting remains an option on Sundays.

The club records will be reviewed against the age categories and round titles recently revised by Archery GB. However this may not be completed until we have reviewed the new Archery GB have Indoor Classification system.

Classifications

Archery GB have updated the Indoor Rounds and Classifications, including changes to the age groups to bring them in alignment with the recent outdoor changes.

This means that all previous indoor Classification have been archived and all archers will have to regain their classifications.

The club will continue to issue the old style indoor classification badges (A to H) until a revised set have been sourced. Any old style indoor badges awarded this season will be replaced in due course.

Competitions

November saw the club start is entry into the two DCAS postal competitions, Portsmouth and Frostbite. This will give us all an idea of how well our archers compare with the rest of the Devon and Cornwall clubs.

The club has entered the following teams into the DCAS Winter Postal Leagues:

DCAS Portsmouth Winter Postal League 2023/2024

  • Three Senior Recurve/Barebow teams
  • One Senior Compound team
  • One Senior Longbow team
  • One Junior Mixed Style team

There are three archers per team, and the club will collate the scores in descending order and the highest scores will be entered each month. Scores will need to be submitted on a club score sheet and signed as indicated. The rules for the competition can be found on the DCAS Postal Competitions page, and the associated score sheet on the Club Score Sheets page.

DCAS Winter Postal – Portsmouth Results

The following scores were submitted by members of the club and as you can see from the results below the club performed exceptionally well:

In November we had 5 wins and 1 loss. A great start to the competition. Well done to all those who submitted score sheets, please keep this up. Please remember this is open to all club members, so please take time to submit an entry to me because even if your score is not used it could count towards your next badge.

Bray 1 League

Running alongside the DCAS Portsmouth Postal and Frostbite Postal Competitions we are introducing this new internal club competition.

To date 4 archers have submitted Bray scores post obtaining a handicap. The current leader with a total of 7236 after shooting 5 qualifying rounds is Steve Millard, well done Steve.

External Competitions

DCAS Summer Postal

September marked the final month of the DCAS Summer Postal League. The following scores were submitted by members of the club and as you can see from the results below the club is performing exceptionally well:

In September we had 2 walk overs, 2 wins and 4 losses. So achieved a 50% win ratio.

  • The Compound team lost against Brixham (965 – 1078)
  • The Longbow team won against Tors (499 – 110)
  • The Mixed ‘A’ team lost against Barnstaple (1064 – 1080)
  • The Mixed ‘B’ team won against Brixham ‘A’ (1028 – 1012)
  • The Mixed ‘C’ team lost against Brixham ‘B’ (876 – 940)
  • The Mixed ‘D’ team won against St Austell ‘B’ by walk over (564 – 0)
  • The Mixed Junior ‘A’ team won against Exmouth ‘B’ by walk over (619 – 0)
  • The Mixed Junior ‘B’ team lost as they did not shoot

The final result of the competition is that our teams:

  • Won three divisions (Short Warwick Divisions B & D and Junior Short Warwick Division 2).
  • Finished in 2nd place in three divisions (Long Warwick Compound, Warwick Longbow & Short Warwick Division 1)
  • Finished in 3rd place in two divisions (Short Warwick Mixed division 3, Junior Short Warwick Division 2).

 

  • Long Warwick Compound Team – retained 2nd place in Division 1
  • Warwick Longbow team – retained 2nd place in Division 2
  • Short Warwick Team A – dropped to 2nd place Division 1
  • Short Warwick Team B – rose to 1st place in Division 2
  • Short Warwick Team C –  dropped to 3rd place in Division 3
  • Short Warwick Team D – retained 1st place in Division 4
  • Short Junior Warwick Team A – retained 1st place in Division 2
  • Short Junior Warwick Team B – retained 3rd place in Division 2

Jack & Neill have retained their titles as the highest scoring U16 Boys Recurve Archer (390) and highest scoring Gents Longbow Archer (275) respectively. This is even more spectacular given that Neill has only been shooting for 18 months, and Jack for less than 12 months. Well done to both archers.

Coronation Competition – Results

The competition has now finished, well done to everyone who took part. 20 people submitted medal qualifying scores and the medals are currently in production and will be with me in due course.

DCAS Autumn Gold – Redruth

A great day out was had by the six archers from Yelverton Bowmen at the DCAS Autumn Gold competition, hosted in glorious sunshine by Redruth Archers.

Linda Wright, Jill Hudson, Corey Richardson, Steve Marsh, John Pengilley & Seraya shot either Albion or Windsor rounds.

The day was capped off with Linda Wright winning the Ladies Barebow Albion, Steve Marsh winning the Gents Barebow Windsor and Seraya winning the Junior Windsor 30 competitions.

Once again can I please remind you all that this is a monthly competition so we all need to be shooting our Warwick rounds for entry into the final round in September, the final day to shoot your round is Sunday 24th September. This is open to all club members who are currently capable of shooting the relevant distances.

Our teams are really well placed but we need your scores in order to keep the momentum up, and be in with a chance of winning a number of the Divisions.

DCAS Winter Postal

The entry details for the DCAS winter postal competitions (Portsmouth & Frostbite) have been issued to the club and we will look to enter a mix of teams in both competitions to cover all bow styles. As with the summer postals these will be open to all club members, with the highest scores each month being submitted. Details will be posted on the website in due course.

Coronation Competition

A further large number of score sheets were submitted in August for this internal club competition, which means to date we have 19 people have taken part and will qualify for a medal.

The competition is open to all club members and we have decided to extend the closing date of the competition to Sunday 24th September to give people more time to submit a round, and be in with a chance to win one of the following medals.

The competition details can be found here, anyone with a 20 yard 252 or AGB Progress award, or above, can shoot a Windsor round and be in with the chance to win a Coronation medal.

Redruth Archers WA1440

Neill White was the sole club representative to make the trip down to Redruth Archers on the 6th August and bravely (lol) represented Yelverton Archers wearing a borrowed club top where “I’m not John” shot longbow in the 70m WA1440 round and scored his 2nd MB qualifying score of 542.

Exmouth Archers World Archery Weekend

On August the 19th & 20th three Yelverton Bowmen archers took part in the Exmouth Archers World Archery Weekend. Iain Lees braved the early conditions on the Saturday in the Compound WA50 round and scoring a respectable 500 which earned him a White WA target badge.

Sunday saw Linda Wright and Neill White join Iain to shoot the WA1440 rounds.

Iain shot again a highly respectable 1154 in the Men’s Compound WA1440 and gained another 2 awards of the Black Star 1100 WA badge and a Blue DCAS FITA star – well done!

Linda came in 2nd in the Ladies Barebow WA1440 with 599 points.

Neill managed 3rd in the Men’s Longbow WA1440 with a qualifying MB 50+ score of 473. Neill has subsequently put in a claim for is Master Bowman Classification, well done Neill.

Indoor Shooting

September marks the start of the indoor season and the club is in the process of reviewing the revised Archery GB Indoor classifications to determine what competitions will be run over the indoor season. Keep an eye on the website for details.

Exmouth Archers World Archery Weekend

August 20, 2023

Three Yelverton Bowmen archers gained entry into the Exmouth Archers hosted tournament between the 19th and 20th of August.

Iain Lees braved the early conditions on the Saturday in the Compound WA50 round and scoring a respectable 500 which earned him a White WA target badge. Results from day one can be found on Ianseo.net.

Sunday saw Linda Wright and Neill White join Iain to shoot the WA1440 rounds.

Conditions were somewhat better than the previous day with early rain giving way to sunshine in the afternoon and a packed shooting line with over 70 archers taking part.

Iain shot again a highly respectable 1154 in the Men’s Compound WA1440 and gained another 2 awards of the Black Star 1100 WA badge and a Blue DCAS FITA star – well done !

Linda came in 2nd in the Ladies Barebow WA1440 with 599 points and Neill managed 3rd in the Men’s Longbow WA1440 with a qualifying MB 50+ score of 473. Results from the second day can also be found on Ianseo.net.

It was another “good day out” for Yelverton Bowmen so hope to see more of us on the shooting line soon.

Seven of our eight teams won their rounds this month, even Short Warwick team 4 and Junior Short Warwick team 2, who only had one score submitted each. Unfortunately only one score was submitted towards the Compound Long Warwick team, and they were beaten by Wadebridge who had only submitted two scores.

Welcome to the third report of the 2023 outdoor shooting season.

Two new club records were set and two existing club records beaten in June.

Certificates will be awarded to the following archers:

    • Long Western – Score 367 (previous 152)
    • Warwick – Score 275 (previous 268)
  • Jill Hudson – Senior Women’s Longbow Record for:
    • Warwick – Score 208 (previous 144)

  • Seraya – U12 Women’s Recurve Record for:
    • Warwick 30 (Short Junior Warwick) – Score 263 (no previous record)
  • John Pengilley – Senior Men’s Recurve Record for:
    • Windsor 50 (Short Windsor) – Score 818 (previous score 781)

Classifications

The following Classification Badges were awarded under the new Archery GB Classification Scheme:

  • Neill White – Bowman 1st Class. This is the highest award than can be issued internally be the club and is a significant achievement given that Neill only joined the club 18 months ago. Well done Neill.
  • Jill Hudson – Bowman 3rd Class
  • John Pengilley – Bowman 3rd Class
  • Jenni Mattock – Archer 2nd Class
  • Steve Marsh – Archer 3rd Class

DCAS Summer Postal

The following scores were entered for June:

This month saw wins for the Compound, Longbow, Mixed A, Mixed B, Mixed C, Mixed D (Bye), Yelverton A (Bye) and Yelverton B.

  • The Compound team won against Lacetown Archers ‘A’ (1092 – 691)
  • The Longbow team won against Lacetown Archers ‘B’ (598 – 374)
  • The Mixed ‘A’ team won against St. Austell ‘A’ (1066 – 284)
  • The Mixed ‘B’ team won against Junction ‘A’ (1003 – 986)
  • The Mixed ‘C’ team won against Exmoor Archers ‘B’ (894 – 776)
  • The Mixed ‘D’ team won via Bye. (583)
  • The Mixed Junior ‘A’ team won via Bye. (882)
  • The Mixed Junior ‘B’ team won against Kyrton Archers (179 – DNS)

Jack retains his title as the highest scoring U16 Boys Recurve Archer, whilst Neill White takes the title of highest scoring Gents Longbow Archer with a score of 275.

After the second month the team standings are as follows:

  • Long Warwick Compound Team – 3rd place in Division 1 (N/C)
  • Warwick Longbow team – 2nd place in Division 2 (Up from 4th)
  • Short Warwick Team A – 2nd place in Division 1 (Up from 3rd)
  • Short Warwick Team B – 2nd place in Division 2 (N/C)
  • Short Warwick Team C –  1st place in Division 3 (Up from 2nd)
  • Short Warwick Team D – 3rd place in Division 4 (Up from 4th)
  • Short Junior Warwick Team A – 1st place in Division 2 (N/C)
  • Short Junior Warwick Team B – 4th place in Division 2 (Up from 5th)

 

Once again can I please remind you all that this is a monthly competition so we all need to be shooting our Warwick rounds for entry into the July round. This is open to all club members who are currently capable of shooting the relevant distances.

Brixham Open Rose – National Record Confirmed

Corey, Neill and Linda all won competition medals. Linda and Neill won Rose Awards, and Neill shot a new Longbow 50+ National Record with his Hereford/Bristol I score of 561.

 

Neill’s national record has now been confirmed. Well done Neill!

Coronation Competition

So far only 5 score sheets have been submitted for the club Coronation Competition. Three have qualified for a Gold medal and two for silver.

The competition runs to the end of August and details can be found here, anyone with a 20 yard 252 or AGB Progress award, or above, can shoot a Windsor round and be in with the chance to win a Coronation medal. The Windsor rounds are as follows:

Shooting a successful Windsor round will also go a long way towards an Archer Classification.
